Course Objectives
Chemistry 5560 is a survey of inorganic chemistry involving a systematic study of atomic structure, structure and bonding in inorganic and organometallic compounds, and representative inorganic reactions. More than just a study of inorganic chemistry, this course should provide a framework or way of thinking about chemistry in fairly broad terms so that the student can organize and understand a much broader array of structures and reactions than they may have studied in detail in the past.
Course Expectations
As with any online course, a larger burden falls to the student than in a normal lecture class. It is the student's responsibility to maintain a pace that allows for sufficient preparation prior to exams. Students are expected to read the lessons, work assigned problems and discuss assigned problems or other elements of the course online with the class.
Tests/Quizzes
3 exams; 1 comprehensive final exam
Major Assignments

Software/Hardware Needed
Acrobat Reader, Word, Java /
Student/Instructor Communication Methods
Email, Online Discussion Groups, Phone, U.S. Mail
Textbooks
Required: Inorganic Chemistry, 3rd edition, by Gary L. Miessler and Donald A. Tarr, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004. Suggested: some type of molecular model set that includes trigonal planar and octahedral geometries such as HGS Fundamental General Chemistry Set (#1001)
Other Requirements
Permission of the instructor is required. Only those students who can not attend the on campus section of this course may enroll in this online section. There are no specific prerequisites for this course. The text and the approach to the subject matter assume the student has had at least undergraduate chemistry courses through physical chemistry. The most important courses are general chemistry, organic chemistry, and at least some physical chemistry. There is probably nothing specific to any of these courses that is critical to success, hence the lack of specific prerequisites. However, students without that background really struggle with this course.
Are there any enrollment restrictions based on where I live?
Only students who live IN TEXAS may enroll in this section.
